Introduction by Lord Rothschild. A report of the lawsuit brought by Lord Rothschild against Gabriel Wells and Owen D. Young, arising from his purchase of what proved to be a sophisticated copy of the first edition of "Tom Jones" by Henry Fielding. The book reproduces Lord Rothschild's statement of claim and transcribes the evidence given in Court by John Hayward (as expert witness), Lord Rothschild (as plaintiff), Gabriel Wells and Owen D. Young (as defendants), Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach (as third party defendant), and William J. K. Diplock (as expert witness). Rosenbach had bought the book from the Kern sale for some 29,000 dollars and sold it to Young.
